Garry Hooper and Racing Sec.

Many members will be aware that Garry has recently had an operation on his leg, unfortunately after the operation Garry suffered a stroke.

I visited him in hospital on Thursday and, as he is still bedridden due to the operation, it is difficult to assess how much the stroke has affected him physically but his speech is slightly slurred but he is still able to communicate very effectively. Whilst I was chatting to his wife and daughter, they told me that he has made major improvements since the stroke and the doctors feel that a full recovery is possible.

However, as always Garry's big concern was for the club and he has asked me to inform everybody that, in view of the stroke, he will have to resign as racing secretary, as he feels that he will not be capable of performing the role next year.

He particularly wanted me to let everybody know in advance of the AGM so that members could give it some thought in advance of the meeting and hopefully someone will volunteer as Garry's successor. It may sound uncaring that we are discussing his committee role so soon after his stroke but Garry had been very stressed about the subject and needed to get wheels in motion. Let’s hope that we can find a successor as the knowledge that the club's race programme is in safe hands would put Garry’s mind at rest.

Hoping Garry has a speedy and full recovery, thoughts with him and family. Do not see that it is too ghoulish to discuss a successor, stressing about this will not aid recovery for Garry and it is beyond reason that Garry should continue under the circumstances.....

Garry is now back at home, I visited him this afternoon and he looks much better. He is able to walk with the aid of a walking frame and he can move both arms freely so the stroke doesn't appear to have done much damage. He is conscious of a slightly slurred speech but it's not that noticeable and I told him that the members that like a few "sherbets" on a Saturday night probably sound far worse than him. (Luckily his sense of humour is intact too).
